Brandsdale was gifted to the NT in 1969 (death duty) and beautifully preserved from that era. Lovely tiny church and walk from Cockaine. Also, if you can find it down a short footpath, the NT-restored Brandsdale Mill. Farndale is also set is the past, Church Houses pub at the far end. Rosedale Abbey next then up the 1:3 Rosedale Chimney bank to a great pub and church at Lastingham with a lovely walk around the edge of the moors (3m). |
Surprisingly charming twisty drive, repeatedly into valleys and out onto the moors. Osmotherley interesting village to walk around, two good pubs, 6 mile walk passing Lady's Chapel and Mount Grace Priory. Drive on to Carleton Bank and Chop Gate (Chop-yat to us!) then down Bilsdale, such a gorgeous valley back home to Helmsley and here. |
Sylish and spaceous market place with great individual shops, Bettys, Barkers, Lewis & Cooper (better than their websites!) |
Slow Roads! Byland Abbey, Mouse Man of Kilburn, up the White Horse bank(walk), Sutton Bank centre(walk), down Sutton Bank to Thirsk for Herriot centre and fish & chips in the market place. Feed the ducks at Newburgh Priory on the way home. |
Lovely quiet route through the wild moors to Whitby (car Park) and a quicker way back via Pickering. Perhaps deviate via the old tv favouite, Goathland. You will pass park & ride at the first roundabout. |
Through open Wolds countryside and quiet pretty sleepy villages, skirting the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds (missing the A64 traffic!). |
A circular drive along Wensleydale (Aysgarth falls**) to Hawes (cheese creamery), then over the fell to Thwaite and back along Swaledale to the lovely historic town of Richmond, a great day out. |
Recommended Walks |
Take care start/end with the main road, then all else is quiet single road. Superb views of the Vale of York, Brandsby church and Old Rectory. Best to go clockwise. About 3 miles. |
Peel Wood walk. You can do a shorter walk by using the main road down to Peel Park to begin. Peel Wood has masses and masses of bluebells in season. |
Walk from the village uphill to Caulkleys Ridge. Views 300 degrees, from the moors to the Wolds to Hovingham. Return along the River Rye to the hall.
For a shorter easier walk with the views, park at the top of Caulkleys Bank and go as far as you like towards Ness and return then it's almost level. |
Several shortish walks around this enchanting place. |
5 mile walk from the car park |
Great views from this walk from Sutton Bank visitor centre around the White Horse, a shorter version starts at the car park below the White Horse. |
Shortish walk (3.5 miles) from Sutton Bank centre going north with spectacular views over the Vale of Mowbay, Thirsk to Northallerton and the Dales in the distance. |
